Calculating Fish Weights

How many times have you wished you could find or had taken your scales to weigh a nice catch? Why not try this? Carry a measuring tape - a cloth one that can be bought in any sewing/craft department. Take the measurements as described below, and use the following Fish Weight Calculator.
If you really goof up and forget or misplace the measuring tape, just use a couple pieces of line to take your mesurements and get the actual numbers when you get home. Be sure to somehow mark one so you'll know which is length and which is girth.
Remember that no length/weight formula can ever replace an accurate scale. However, the following calculator should enable to you to get a fair estimate that's within about 10 percent of the actual weight.

  • Measure the length from lower jaw to the fork of the tail
  • Measure the girth at the widest part around the body
  • Choose the species, then enter your fish's length and girth, and the calculator will do the rest!

Many Sunfish fishermen go for bluegill or pumpkinseed. You will find sunfish fishing tips here. Many people know how to catch a Sunfish, but there is more to learn. Use a Sunfish recipe from this site for a delicious meal of fish.

Whether you are in the states of Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kentucky, Colorado, Indiana, Virginia, California, Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, or New Jersey, there are fish to catch. Most all states have sunfish or bream. If you are in one of the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, or Quebec, there are fish to catch. You might be trolling with cranks as your lure of choice. You might be jigging with jigs. You will probably need rods, reels, some live bait (crawlers, minnows, leeches), sinkers, leaders, and fishing line. More often times than not, it takes a boat to get to those spots, as well. Maybe you will be fishing from the bank or wading, however. You may need fishing reports or maybe even a fishing guide. This website will try to help you achieve the goal of catching bigger, better, and more numerous fish.
